The Food and Drug Administration has issued a voluntary recall of the purple pill Nexium for a possible increased risk of heart attack and stroke. A company spokesman said the company has “removed all product information for this product” and is working to file a formal recall petition with the FDA.

It is important to note that the safety and efficacy of Nexium have been well documented in numerous clinical studies, including the results of an open label, randomized controlled study of Nexium.”
The FDA issued an alert to AstraZeneca in March for any drugs that were being marketed as “sales drugs” for the brand or generic versions of the drug. These were “potentially dangerous, and potentially fatal, adverse effects on the central nervous system, including hypotension, syncope, headache, nervous system depression, sedation, coma, and death.”
In February, the FDA issued a warning about heart-related side effects when patients take Nexium, saying they were associated with the use of the drug, in combination with other drugs.
The FDA has received a report of heart problems for a drug containing the active ingredient esomeprazole magnesium. An FDA advisory panel voted 18-6 last week and voted 8-2 in favor of the drug. The agency issued a voluntary recall on Tuesday.

AstraZeneca said the recall will include all prescription Nexium products sold by the drug companies, and all Paediatric Nexium brand and generic products. The company said it is working to file a formal recall petition with the FDA.
The company is also conducting the following clinical trial to help consumers identify the drug they may need to treat a serious medical condition.

What is Reflux?

Taking this medicine • You can take your tablet at any time of the day either with food or on an empty stomach. • Swallow your tablet whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet. This is because the tablet contains coated pellets, which stop the medicine from being broken down by the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.
Alternative method of taking this medicine• Put the tablet in a glass of still (non-fizzy) water. Do not use any other liquids. • Stir until the tablet breaks up (the mixture will not be clear) then drink the mixture straight away or within 30 minutes. Always stir the mixture just before drinking it. • To make sure that you have drunk all of the medicine, rinse the glass very well with half a glass of water and drink it. The solid pieces contain the medicine – do not chew or crush them
